There's something classically understated about Johannes Vermeer's masterpiece Girl With A Pearl Earring.
Vermeer's subtle strokes and the manner in which he draws attention to the single earring testify to his genius and succeed in making most observers overlook the fact that he couldn't find himself a model with decent hair - seriously, who wears a headscarf when they're having their portrait painted?
